If you’re in the market for a new ute, then you’ll want to read this post. Several manufacturers have announced new utes to hit the market in Australia either in 2016 or in the next couple of years (if you can hold out that long). We feature 5 new utes that are coming soon in no particular order.

The next commercial vehicle in the German luxury brand’s lineup is the Mercedes-Benz GLT. Due for testing in Australia in 2017, the ute is based on the Nissan Navara and features a four-cylinder engine and V6 turbo diesels. Sporty bodywork, a premium-looking interior and a number of accessories make for a good looking vehicle – so you may not want to get it dirty.

French brand Renault is looking to launch a modern dual-cab ute in mid-2016, so around about now. Like the Benz GLT, the Renault Alaskan is based on the Nissan Navara in body style but retains the Renault look around the ‘face’. Features include a: 2.3-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine, interior cab to seat five and best-in-class fuel economy.

If you require a work ute, you may want to bypass the Hyundai Santa Cruz ute. The towing capacity, payload and ground clearance leave something to be desired, but if you’re looking for a ute that drives like an SUV or a sedan, then you’re the target market. It’s not clear when this one will go into production, but the concept was shown at the 2015 Detroit motor show.

US off-road brand Wrangler has come up with the next-generation Jeep, namely a ute version of the jeep. It is expected to land in Australia in 2018. With a seven-slot grille, hybrid tyres, a heavy duty axle, four-cylinder turbo engine and fuel efficiency, what you get may look like a Jeep, but it has a more superior off-road capability.

Peugeot/Citroen Utes

French conglomerate Peugeot Citroen has decided to enter the one-tonne ute market, with the Australian market set firmly in their sights. Though specific details are yet to be known, since Fiat and Toyota both have existing commercial vehicle relationships with the company, it is assumed one of these will be a co-developer to reduce costs. Toyota is the favourite contender to provide an existing base for the French ute, since the HiLux is such a popular seller in Australia.
