Termites

austates-termitesTermites are often mistakenly termed ‘white ants’, however, there are distinct differences between termites and ants. Primarily, termites are nocturnal creatures that are generally not seen on the surface. They live in underground or enclosed nests, making the crevices that surround homes the ideal nesting place.

Termites have extremely strong jaws and will effortlessly eat paper, wood, furniture and even clothes. The main reason why they are such a hazardous pest is that their destruction remains unnoticed in the preliminary stages. Termites will burrow through the inside of wood, devouring its entire core without penetrating the exterior surface. So when this occurs in wooden floor boards or support beams, it is extremely dangerous as the wood is hollowed out with no visible signs.

It is important to ensure that you do not have any water on the perimeter of your house as termites thrive in moist environments. Leaking taps should be repaired. Rainwater run-off should be diverted away from the house.

Across Australia, all densely populated areas are affected by termites. Humid regions such as Queensland offer the perfect breeding ground for termites, as does the large amount of wood used when constructing houses.

Because termites remain hidden underground – or in similar sheltered areas – it is very important to conduct an annual professional termite inspection to ensure that your home is protected. They will display various signs of their existence, but these signs usually only present after the damage has already occurred.

Signs to look out for:

o   Hollow Timber – knocking on solid timber will sound hollow or papery if termites have eaten the interior.

o   Skirting Boards – similarly, your skirting boards will noticeably be disintegrated when pressure is applied if termites are residing within the walls. There will also be sediment underneath the skirtings from the wood that they have chewed.

o   Door Frames – termites excrete a protective ‘mud’ that traps heat and moisture in their dwelling. This causes timber to swell, resulting in doors and windows being unable to open and close easily.
