If you clicked on this article expecting to find a story depicting Harry Potter and Butch Cassidy defeating Voldemort in an elaborate train heist, using hosepipes, I’m sorry but you’re sadly mistaken.

While this blog article is indeed about durable and reliable guns, wands and nozzles, it isn’t in any way connected to a Western or a boy wizard’s adventures. But we’ll try and pop a few references throughout to keep you all satisfied. Deal? Good. Now onto business.

Spray guns, wands and nozzles are important instruments in your fight against evil, namely, the pests that infest people’s homes. Whether you’re exterminating ants, termites, spiders or silverfish, you’re going to need these weapons in your inventory. Now we aren’t talking about old colt guns or magic wands. While these could be effective in getting rid of pest infestations, we wouldn’t recommend it. It would be a costly and dubious procedure at best. The types of guns and wands that connect to your sprayers for the efficient distribution of pesticides will do the job much more effectively. Horticulturalists, farmers and groundskeepers also sometimes use them to spray crops and weeds. So what features should you be looking out for in a reliable gun, wand or hose nozzle that will see you through many battles?

Fighting termites with guns blazing

When it comes to choosing a gun for your sprayer, you shouldn’t be looking for the flashiest in design, rather, the most responsive and corrosion resistant. Trust us; you aren’t going to intimidate termites, or any other small insects for that matter, by looking fierce. So there’ll be none of that firing your gun into the air Keanu-Reeves-style action going on (plus it’s a waste of chemicals). What you really want to concentrate on is finding a spray gun with a sturdy grip, a corrosion resistant outside coating (in a material like polymer) and a Teflon valve. Teflon is particularly chemical resistant and a very durable material for use in spray guns. Purchasing a gun with a safety trigger lock is also a good idea, so no one goes shooting themselves in the foot. We’ll forgive you if you and your crew want to do a slow-motion walk to the treatment site with your backpack sprayers secured and your guns at the ready.

The wand chooses the wriggler, Harry

Depending on where the creepy crawlies are hiding, you may need to attach a wand to your gun to spray those hard to reach areas. A wand will also allow you to distribute chemicals into the soil without breaking your back by bending over for a prolonged period. There’s no magic spells involved, just good, old-fashioned connectors. Be sure to check that the wand has a connector that will fit your gun upon purchase. The use of a wand is ideal for flooding trenches or conducting soil pre-treatment. You’ll want to get one with a decent flow rate, mind, so you can cover large areas efficiently. And ensure that it’s made out of stainless steel with a hollow centre; not beech, aspen or cedar with a unicorn hair core like your regular magic wand.

Got ya nozzle

A nozzle, not to be confused with your schnozzle (very large nose) can really make or break how effectively you distribute chemicals. You want a nozzle that’s versatile and will suit a wide variety of application techniques. A nozzle that will allow you to disperse chemicals in a single powerful, mighty stream, and also in a delicate conical mist. Some chemicals require careful, restrained application, so it’s no good having just one straight spraying nozzle for every job. These are great if you want to target a specific area without jeopardising others, but for larger treatment sites you’ll cover more ground in a shorter period of time with a misting or shower nozzle.
