Some Ripper Tips For Australia Day

by Jan 22, 2015Lifestyle, News

Australia Day (and, thankfully, a long weekend) is just around the corner. In case you’d forgotten to pack an Australian flag into your weekender bag, here are some ideas for a true-bloody-blue ‘Straya Day.

BEER

What’s an Australia Day without beer? Or normal Australian day for that matter… Why not take the opportunity to celebrate some of Australia’s best beers and sample a selection between you and your friends? There is never a shortage of good Aussie beers to try, but here are some recommendations:

  • Feral Brewing Co.’s Hop Hog – a (obviously) hoppy beer with a nice kick; it does have an ABV of 5.8% after all
  • McLaren Vale Beer Co.’s Vale Ale – a fruity, toffee-like lager great in the February heat.
  • Burleigh Brewing Co.’s 28 Pale Ale – a flavourful beer with a complex, fruity character
  • Little Creature’s Rogers – it’s hard to go past a Little Creature’s beer, but this one’s toffee and caramel malt flavours and gentle bitterness make this a unique, easy-drinking amber ale.
  • James Squire’s Amber Ale ‘Nine Tales‘ – a sweet, malty, and full-bodied beer.

Or, if you’re feeling a bit classy, you could follow James Squire’s post on how to host a beer tasting event and comment with your friends about the subtle beery hints on the tip of your tongue.

When in doubt, your local bottle-o attendant will be able to recommend some great Australian brews.

BBQ

Well, duh.

But if you’re feeling like something other than the classic snags, why not be patriotic? I am of course talking about one of our national animals, the kangaroo. There are so many options at the shops now – even from your local Coles and Woolies – Kanga bangas, kangaroo steaks, kangaroo burgers. Not only is it ironically patriotic, eating kangaroo meat is better for your health and the environment – it’s high in protein, low in fat, and boasts anti-carcinogenic and anti-diabetes properties, and kangaroos require no extra land or water for farming and produce little methane.

If you’re a bit of an avid cooker, there are plenty of great BBQ ideas you could whip out to impress your guests (or, to impress your hosts with your kindness and forethought!).

Or, when in doubt, bring a plate of lamingtons.

Slip_n_slideSLIP ‘N’ SLIDE

You’re never too old to slip ‘n’ slide, and they’re actually really cheap and easy to set up! Or, if you just want to chill the whole day in a pool but don’t have one (or that awesome friend with one), get a blow up pool! Again, very affordable, and will make the incoming heat much more bearable… and you get to see your mates bellyflop into the ground after a few too many beers…

There are countless other ideas out there, but as long as there’s good food, ample drinks, and good company, you’re bound to have an awesome Australia Day.
