What can you make from the scrap metal you have around the home? These creative geniuses have taken scrap metal from old cars, bikes, trucks and vans and given them new life. Call it art, upcycling, or something else – we call it genius.

Steel Pond Studios

Robert Jefferson Travis Pond makes huge sculptures out of scrap metal, namely old motorcycle parts. Welding together assorted nuts, bolts, exhausts, gas tanks and other assorted spare parts, his often ferocious looking beasts have plenty of character. With the original colours of the bikes showing through, you can still spot Honda and Yamaha artwork on some of his creations.

Edouard Martinet

While Travis’s beasts above are huge and ferocious, in contrast Edouard’s appear more delicate and elegant. The magic of Edouard’s art is he achieves this high level of precious craftsmanship without ever soldering or welding parts together. These seemingly realistic depictions of insects are painstakingly put together from scrap parts he finds in flea markets, including headlights, wiper blades and brake parts.

Akkijyrkka’s Immence Cow Sculptures

The heading pretty much says it all – Miina Akkijyrkka makes immense cow sculptures. Using scrap metal from cars, and in one case a whole van for a torso, Miina makes huge and colourful bovine creations are extreme works of art.

Carhenge

Yes, you read that right. Someone has recreated Stonehenge – but this time it’s in Nebraska. And made of cars. Carhenge is the creation of artist Jim Reinders and was put together with his family as a memorial to his father. The cars are all painted grey, and either buried nose-first into the ground or welded together to form the arches.
